Upgraded Design

The upgraded version of the Tacoma upper control arms represents a significant improvement over the original parts. Designed to offer superior performance and durability, these control arms are specifically coordinated with the lift kit that typically includes various components such as extended shocks, coil springs, and other parts to allow for the suspension system to be raised to the desired height within 2-4 inches. This lift perfectly fits the original wheel hub and offers increased stability and security. These features provide a better choice for off-road enthusiasts and those looking to enhance their vehicle’s performance and reliability.

Considerate Details

The front upper control arms with ball joints are constructed from high-strength 45 gauge steel, which has a 36mm pipe outer diameter and 4mm wall thickness. This material provides excellent resistance to deformation and offers superior strength compared to ordinary A3 steel. The mounting threads and bolts require lubrication before being tightened in either direction, but not over-tightened. This ensures that the bolts can provide a secure fit and prevent the control arm from becoming loose or detached during driving. The usage of the rubber bushing or PU bushing provides excellent durability, stability, and control, ensuring that the vehicle can handle even the most challenging driving conditions.

Failure Symptoms

  • Poor Steering Control: A worn or damaged upper control arm can cause the vehicle to understeer or oversteer when driving, especially at higher speeds or when making turns.
  • Wobbly Steering Wheel: A wobbly or loose steering wheel is an obvious sign of wear and tear on the chassis system.
  • Strange Noises: If you always hear strange noises such as squeaking and creaking (rubber rubbing), clicking and clacking (metal hitting), the control arm body, bushing or ball joint may be damaged.
  • Uneven Tire Wear: When the front upper control arms are worn or damaged, it can cause the tires to wear unevenly or develop unusual wear patterns, such as cupping or scalloping.
  • Reduced Responsiveness: When the upper control arms are worn or damaged, it can cause the steering to feel less responsive or more difficult to turn, especially when making sharp turns.

Well-designed Ball Joint

  1. The hexagonal nut is used to secure the ball joint to the front upper control arm. It provides a tight, secure fit that helps to prevent the ball joint from loosening or coming apart during driving.
  2. The ball joint pin is typically made of heat-treated alloy steel with a Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, which provides the necessary strength and durability to withstand rigorous off-road rides.
  3. The tower cover is designed to protect the ball joints from dust, debris, and other contaminants that can cause wear over time.
  4. The bottom shield is located underneath the ball joint to help prevent debris from entering the interior.
  5. When it comes to mounting bolts, lubrication is required to ensure smooth movement, but it’s important not to over-tighten them in either direction. The ball joint, on the other hand, doesn’t require additional grease.

How to Install

1. Raise the vehicle using a jack and support it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is securely supported before you start work.
2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the side where you want to install the new upper control arm.
3. Locate the upper control arm mounting bolts and remove them using a socket and ratchet or wrench.
4. Carefully remove the old upper control arm from the vehicle, taking note of its orientation and position.
5. Install the new upper control arm in the same position as the old one, making sure it aligns with the mounting points on the vehicle’s frame and the wheel hub assembly.
6. Hand-tighten the mounting bolts and then torque them to the specifications using a torque wrench.
7. Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle to the ground.
8. Repeat the same process on the other side if needed.
9. Check your work and perform an alignment. (If you want more information, you can refer to the Ultimate Guide To Upper Control Arm Replacement.)
