#Why do pistons have 3 rings?
The piston ring comprises a gas ring and an oil ring. Action of the air ring The purpose of the air ring is to ensure the seal between the piston and the cylinder wall, preventing the gas in the cylinder from entering the crankcase, while transferring the heat received by the top of the piston to the cylinder wall, where it is then carried away by the coolant or air. Most pistons use two or three gas rings. The oil ring forms a uniform oil film on the cylinder wall to play the role of oil collection. The collected oil flows into the oil pan through the return hole of the oil ring groove.
